Firewood in cages under a shelter

Loose, stacked and solid cubic metres of firewood: what is the difference?

The three units in which firewood is sold mean different amounts of wood. How to convert between them so that you know what you are really buying.

Firewood is sold in three units, and customers often confuse them. The same figure gives you a different amount of wood each time.

Loose cubic metre (prms)

A loose cubic metre is a cube with one-metre sides into which the logs are tipped loosely. It has the most air between the logs.

Stacked cubic metre (prm)

A stacked cubic metre is the same cube with the logs stacked side by side. One loose cubic metre corresponds to 0.75 of a stacked cubic metre once the logs are stacked.

Solid cubic metre (m³)

A solid cubic metre is the volume of the wood itself, with no gaps; it is used for roundwood. One stacked cubic metre corresponds to approximately 0.59 of a solid cubic metre of wood.

How to compare prices

If one supplier offers loose firewood and another stacked, the prices need to be converted to the same unit. Divide the price per loose cubic metre by 0.75 to get the price per stacked cubic metre. Our firewood calculator will convert both the volume and the price for you.
